Wojtek’s story
Who Wojtek was, why we wear his mark and who is behind the brand.

Corporal Wojtek is more than clothing. It is a story of courage, loyalty and hope in the darkest years of the last century. We started with it because it reminds us that real strength does not always look the way we expect.
The Brave Bear Who Fought for Freedom
The bear who became a soldier
Not every hero wears a uniform. Some wear fur.
Wojtek was an orphaned bear cub taken in by Polish soldiers in Iran during the Second World War. He was meant to be a travelling companion and quickly became part of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company. He ate with the men, slept beside them and went with them across the Middle East and on to Italy.
When the company was due to sail for Europe there was a problem: British Army rules did not allow animals on board military transport. The soldiers found a way round it. They entered Wojtek on the roll as a private of the Polish Army, and that is how a bear became a soldier.
In time he became the symbol of the whole unit, enormously strong and gentle at once, and good for the men’s spirits every day. Eventually he was made corporal, and that rank gave us our name: Corporal Wojtek.

Monte Cassino, 1944
In 1944 the Polish II Corps fought at Monte Cassino, one of the hardest battles of the Italian campaign. According to the men who served with him, Wojtek helped carry heavy crates of ammunition and supplies up to the line.
On 18 May 1944 Polish soldiers raised their flag over the ruins of the monastery, and the battle opened the Allies’ road to Rome. Wojtek became a symbol of their courage and endurance.
After the war
In September 1946 the company landed at Glasgow with Wojtek and was stationed at a camp in Berwickshire. Many of the men could not go home, because the communist authorities in Poland regarded soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces in the West with suspicion. The soldiers did not want Wojtek to end up in communist Poland, so before they were demobilised they found him a home at Edinburgh Zoo.
He moved there in November 1947. His old comrades visited him regularly, and they said he came closer whenever he heard Polish or a familiar voice. For many of them he was a living memory of wartime brotherhood and of a homeland they could not return to.
Wojtek died at the zoo in December 1963. In 2015 a statue of him walking beside a soldier of the Polish Armed Forces was unveiled in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh.

How we design
Our clothing tells Wojtek’s story in a modern way, through form, detail and symbol. At its centre is the bear’s mark: raw, bold and timeless.
- clean, modern form
- lettering inspired by Polish type of the 1930s
- the discipline of a military layout
- symbols of courage, loyalty and brotherhood
Every element is considered. Every line means something. It is not just a look, it is a language of symbols.
Every T-shirt carries one mark in two versions, Classic and Night Eye. The shirts are 185 gsm with a body that has no side seams, and every size is measured in centimetres in the size guide.
